HENDERSON COUNTY POST OFFICES AND POSTMASTERS

Jonathan Kennon Thompson Smith

Mr. Jonathan Kennon Thompson Smith of Jackson has published seven genealogical miscellanies for Henderson County.  He wishes to share this information as widely as possible and has granted permission for these web pages to be created.  We thank Mr. Smith for his generosity.  Copyright, Jonathan K. T. Smith, 2001

Post offices were generally centers of "community," places where people traded with small shopkeepers and gathered for other activities. They remain places of local importance and commerce. People often identified their localities by these post offices in a broader context than just a place where mail was posted, received and distributed. Mr. L. M. McDaniel, Old Malesus Road, Jackson, Tennessee compiled from microfilm records of the United States Post Office, the post offices and their postmasters and dates of their appointment in western Tennessee and arranged them in an uncopyrighted manuscript, WEST TENNESSEE POSTMASTER APPOINTMENTS, 1789-1971 (Jackson, 1992). He thoughtfully has given permission to the present writer to incorporate the Henderson County post offices and postmasters, from his manuscript, in the A GENEALOGICAL MISCELLANY, HENDERSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE, II. For those post offices still operative in Henderson County, updated information for the past thirty or so years has been received by the present writer and appended herein to the McDaniel compilation, based on data from the office of the Historian, United States Postal Service, Washington, D.C.
