By Act of Congress, March 1, 1889, a special schedule for the 1890 Census was to be prepared for those surviving veterans of the Civil War (or their widows) who had served in the Federal armed forces. Items on the schedule included name, rank, company, regiment; date of enlistment, date of discharge, length of service and spaces were also provided for listing of disabilities or other general information thought relevant to the veteran or widow. These individuals were to have been listed in the minor civil divisions (which in Tennessee were civil districts) in which they lived but this was not done consistently.

The present writer has taken the data relevant for Henderson County from National Archives Call Number Microfilm 70, Microcopy M-123, Roll 98.
