Decaturville — County Seat

Chapter III

Photographs

Decatur County was formed in 1845, and named in honor of Commodore Stephen Decatur
of the U. S. Navy. The first court met in Decaturville in 1848, in a cabin on the west side
of the square. The first courthouse was a two-story frame house, which burned n 1869.
A contract was let in October 1869 for a two-story brick building which cost $9000.00.
This building burned in 1926.
