During his life time, David researched the history of several Decatur and Henderson County families. His research provides important basic research on the history of families that now live or have lived in these two counties. Like all research, it is not perfect and is known to contain both errors and omissions. By policy, David's original research will not be updated to correct these errors but will be maintained in the state left by David. Claudius Gloud[1] Long. Died, Mar 1820, in Rutherford Co., NC?. Burial in Washington Co., TN. Gloud Long was son of another Gloud Long. The elder had a will in 1801 in Rutherford Co., NC. The younger Gloud has a will dated 1820 in which he lists sons Andrew Morrison Long, Gloud Miller Long, William Long, James F. Long, Hugh W. Long, and John S. Long.

William Henry Hugh[3] Long (Hugh Watson, 3). Born, 14 Jul 1834, in Perry Co., TN. Died, 15 Feb 1896, in Perry Co., TN. Burial in Bible Hill Cem., Perry Co., TN. Census: 1850, in Decatur Co., TN. Henry Hugh Long learned the tanner's trade but abandoned the business after his apprenticeship. He served in the Federal army in the 2nd Tennessee cavalry under Col. O. N. Haney and served through the later part of the Civil war. He and his wife were members of the Missionary Baptist Church. He settled on Deer Creek in Perry County and was Sheriff of Perry County 1868-1870.

Census: 1850, in Henderson Co., TN. Occupation: Merchant. "William B. Long was born in Henderson County, Tenn., May 7, 1848, of poor but respectable parentage. His father, Jefferson Long, dying when willian was very young, left him in almost destitute circumstances. He was reared by his mother and step-father, 'who was also in moderate circumstances,' up to the age of seventeen years, after which he started out penniless, with nothing but his unflinching determination to succeed in life. He worked incessantly, almost day and night, until he by dint of hard labor earned a sufficiency to set himself up in business, which he commenced in the village of Middleburg (Long) in 1880. He was elected justice of the peace over his opponents by a handsome majority in 1882. He has made rapid strides in the way of fame and wealth, and at this early date [c1887] is worth between $10,000 and $15,000, and now stands as one of the leading and most enterprising men of his county. Mr. Long is a man of smooth temperament, unassuming, accomodating, and well liked by all unbiased minds who have dealings with him." [Goodspeed's History of Tennessee]
