During his life time, David researched the history of several Decatur and Henderson County families. His research provides important basic research on the history of families that now live or have lived in these two counties. Like all research, it is not perfect and is known to contain both errors and omissions. By policy, David's original research will not be updated to correct these errors but will be maintained in the state left by David. However, we are happy to publish the family research of any families connected with Decatur or Henderson County. We will also publish comments as notes to David's research. Peter[1] Houston. Born, circa 1763, in KY. The Houston family came from Scotland to America and settled in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Peter Houston moved to Kentucky for several years, living in Fayette County. He later moved to Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, in order to free his slaves. Peter moved to Perry Co. about 1818 and settled about a half mile south of Bear creek Church. He and his wife probably are buried in the Barnett Cemetery.

John Lucky Houston migrated to Decatur County (then Perry County) around 1818. He homesteaded about one fourth of a mile south of Bear Creek Church.

6. William (Bill) Houston. Born, May 1857. Census: 1900, in Decatur Co., TN. He married Cora Lee Burton, daughter of Jerome Smith Burton and Margaret Wilson (Maggie) Dickson. In the 1900 census William Houston is living in the household of his sister Eliza J. Houston. He and his wife are said to have move to Texas and are buried there.

Sarah Jane[3] Houston (John Lucky, 2). Born, 16 Dec 1826, in TN. Died, 14 Jul 1916, in Parsons, Decatur Co., TN. Burial in Parsons Cem., Decatur Co., TN.
She married, first, Burrell Rushing, son of Elijah Rushing and Unknown. Born, circa 1821, in AL. Died, circa 1864. Burial in Tolley Cem.?, Decatur Co., TN.

The house lived in by Burrell Rushing later came to be known as the Townsend House. The following is from Lillye Younger's "History of Decatur County."

"Townsend House, an Ante-Bellum house in Parsons has an interesting history despite the fact it is still a home.

"It is a picturesque colonial house, perched on a hill, overlooking a crest of fertile farm land and green pastures with cattle grazing lands, about one mile east of Parsons on the old Perryville road.

"It was formerly a two-story log house, chinked with mud, which was built during the 1830's. . . . It was built with an open hall through the center of the house, which was called a 'dog trot' back then. . . .

"The house was sold to Burl [sic.] Rushing in 1844. . . . Some years later he married Sarah Houston and they lived here. During the civil war days "Aunt Sarah" as she was called, sat on the front porch all day during the battle of Shilo and could hear the roar of the cannons from the battles, a distance of 50 miles. Many years later she entertained her grandchildren with accounts of this incident.

"During the war the guerillas entered the couple's home in search of gold and strung up her husband in an effort to get him to tell where the gold was hidden. Each time they tightened the rope, he refused. During the episode the Confederate soldiers came by and the guerillas fled. Mrs. Rushing released her husband who was strung up over the spot where the gold was buried.

"Under the living room floor of the house was a hideout, which could be reached by a secret trap door to the floor."

While the story above places the blame on Union raiders, in actuality it probably was a crime of a local band of outlaws. The tactic is the same as used by a local outlaw, Lem Bussell (later a preacher), against the Myracle family.

The house later passed to Sarah's second husband, Rennie Raines, and to his son Lennie Rains. It passed out of the family by sale in 1918. The auction at which it was sold was a major event remembered for years by many people in the community. Children:

James Newton[3] Houston (John Lucky, 2). Born, 22 Jan 1837. Died, 30 Jul 1910. Burial in Houston Cem., Cub Creek, Decatur Co., TN. Occupation: Physician.
James Newton Houston was a doctor. He lived on Cub Creek two miles east of the old Mt. Oak School on Highway 69. He is called Thomas Newton Houston in Goodspeed's History of Tennessee which says: "Dr. Houston was educated in the college at Decaturville, and attended lectures in Nashville in 1856-57. In the summer of 1857 he began the practice of medicine in Perry County, at Brown's Mill. In the course of four or five months he returned to Decatur County, where he has since continued the exercise of his noble profession. At the outbreak of the war he enlisted with the Fifty-second Tennessee Regiment of the Confederate Army under the command of Col. B. J. Lee; was assistant surgeon of the regiment, at the hosiptal, and the Battle of Shilo. After twelve months service he returned to Decatur County. . . . He is a member of the Republican party, and a Mason." [Goodspeed's History of Tennessee]

He appears in the 1900 census as Martin J. Houston.

Samuel Madison Houston, known as Madison, lived about one mile south of Bear Creek Church in Decatur County. In the Civil War he was 3rd Lieutenant, Co. F, Crews' Infantry Batallion, C.S.A.

The assignment of Ezra Jackson Houston as a son of Jefferson Perry Houston and Jane Loftin is arbtirary. There seems to be enough data to exclude him as child of Jefferson Perry Houston's brothers. There are no good census data in Decatur County after 1850 for Jefferson Perry Houston, who may have lived for a while in Missouri. One Houston family researcher places this Ezra Jackson Houston as a son of John Graham Houston.

He met and fell in love with Margaret Rushing and they were married February 8, 1882. They built a house in the Bear Creek section and a post office was established here by the name of Partinville, being named after the first Postmaster, George W. Partin. "After the Midland Railroad was built and the town of Parsons established, George W. Partin and his family moved there. He owned several businesses in Parsons and served as Postmaster of Parsons from December 7, 1893, to January 18, 1909. "In 1912, Teddy Roosevelt gave George Partin a six cylinder open type used Ford car, for Partin's services in the presidential campaign. The car was shipped from Chicago by flat railroad car. It was the first one in Parsons. Fred Rains drove the Partin Ford to Mt. Tabor and broke up the service at a summer revival since it was the first car many had seen. The noise was deafening and the congregation heard the Ford long before it came in sight. Even the preacher said he had never seen a car and was going to see this one, so he stopped preaching to go out to see it.
