A replacement marker erected from her in the 1980s reads: "Wife of Bennett Powers" "Grandmother of Sherode Powers" "She was a charter member of first methodist church of this county. They came from the S.C. coast 1828, 800 miles on a two wheel cart." Children:

2. Other Children. The research of Sara Thomas lists three additional children: Marinda Powers, John W. Powers, and Betty Ann Powers. According to Sara thomas, John W. powers went to Arkansas to avoid the Civil War. He got drunk and froze to death. Betty Ann Powers married an unknown Millner and had sons John, William Wesley, and Thomas. This may be the Millner family at Oak Grove Cemetery in Middleburg--John B. (1863-1931), Willie (1870-1932), and I. T. (wife Rhoda d. 1895). All children of this Bennett powers were born in South Carolina.

Stephen Powers received his education in his native county, and resided under the paternal roof until the outbreak of the war. He enlisted August, 1862, in Company A, Seventh Tennessee Cavalry, remaining in service until the surrender; was mustered out in 1865. He is a Republican; gave his first presidential vote for U.S. Grant. . . . Mr. Powers moved to his present place of residence in 1866, owning 435 acres, which he was enabled to purchase by his economy, industry and good management. He is a man of integrity, greatly respected by all who know him. He and his wife are members of the Missionary Baptist Church." Sarah Ann[4] Powers (Stephen, 9). Born, 3 Aug 1838. Died, 22 Nov 1917. Burial in Rushing Grove C., Decatur Co., TN. The following story has been passed down in the Rushing family. When Sarah died a widow in 1917 she had a white English bulldog who watched as she was lowered into the grave. When the people left and went home no one paid any attention to the dog. It was not until the next morning that the dog was missed. Someone went by the cemetery and found that the dog lay dead by Sarah Ann's grave. The following is the will of Sarah Ann Rushing: "State of Tennessee, Decatur County "I, S. A. Rushing of Decatur County, Tennessee, do make and publish this as my last will and testament, hereby revoking any and all wills by me heretofore made. "(1) I direct that all my debts be paid by my executor as soon after my death as possible. "(2) I direct that Modi Rushing, daughter of J. M. & Maggie Rushing, have two bedsteds, feather beds and most of my bed clothing also my bureau clock, trunk, all the picture but one and one cow and calf or money enough money enough [sic.] to buy one good cow and calf, one half of tableware the long mirror. "(3) I direct that Bertha Rushing, daughter of J. M. Rushing one over cast quilt one half of my table ware, one cover lead, one Rocking chair cane back and bottom. "(4) I direct that J. M. Rushing have the remainder of my personal property. "(5) I direct that my executor collect all debts due me after my death. "(6) I appoint A. J. Brown to be my executor of this will without bond. S. He was captured April 8, 1862, at Island No. 10, and sent as a prisoner of war to Camp Douglas, Illinois. He was exchanged at Vicksburg. On a muster roll dated October 21, 1863, he is near Mobile, Alabama. At this time he is noted to be a 3rd Sergeant and age 25. Children:

This infant, the only natural child of William Franklin Rushing and Sarah Ann Powers, is buried in the Middleburg community in a cemetery identified in "Henderson County, Tennessee Cemetery Inscriptions" as the Powers Cemetery. The grave is now unmarked because in 1978 family members moved the marker, but not the grave, to Rushing Grove Cemetery in Decatur County.

He was elected justice of the peace over his opponents by a handsome majority in 1882. John actually went by both last names, Freeman and Aldridge. John was born on February 15, 1864, to Mary Jane Freeman Aldridge. John's father, according to his death certificate was John Aldridge. However, Mary's 1916 obituary in the Lexington Progress says that she lost her first husband Thomas Eldridge by death. Our family only knew that John's father was an Aldridge and that he fought and died in the Civil War, around the time of John's birth. So far, I have been unsuccessful in finding any matching military records for my Aldridge great great grandfather. "After her husband's death, Mary Jane moved into the Jesse Moody household to take care of Jesse's ailing wife Jemina. Even before Jemina's death, Mary had children by Jesse. They were all referred to as Freeman's until Jemina died, and Jesse and Mary married. According to one older relative, Mary's neighbors had known her longer as a Freeman and had hardly known her Aldridge husband, so they called her and her children by the Freeman name. "On December 11, 1884, John (using the last name Freeman) married Martha Jane Rogers in Decatur County, TN. They moved to Fannin County, TX, within a few years, but by 1900 John and family were living in Decatur County, TN. They were all listed with the last name Aldridge in the 1900 census. However, we know that most of the children (even ones born after 1900) continued to use the Freeman name. John and Martha separated sometime before 1918. At that time, Martha and most of their children were living in Fannin County, TX, while John was living here with his daughter Viola and son-in-law Hulis Hays. Martha died the following year from the flu epidemic and is buried in Fannin County. "On August 9, 1922, John married Ada Florence Powers (Martha's cousin) in

Henderson County, TN. He married under the name of Aldridge. I was told by an older relative that he had changed his name legally by then but that the record was lost when the court house burned. In 1924, John and AdaAs first son died at birth. He is buried in an unmarked grave at Judson Cemetery. Their next child was born in 1925; this was my grandfather John Wesley Aldridge. John Washington Freeman / Aldridge died on July 18, 1941, at his home in Middleburg from lip cancer and was buried at Judson Cemetery." Children:
