The Rushing Family

Ira Baxter Rushing

MY NAME IS IRA BAXTER RUSHING. I LIVE NEAR CLAYTON N.C. IN JOHNSTON CO. JUST A FEW MILES EAST OF RALEIGH, N.C. I WAS BORN IN ANSON CO. N.C. ON THE EAST SIDE OF BROWN CREEK, NEAR WHAT IS CALLED BROWN CREEK SWAMP. RICHARD AND SOLOMON RUSHING OWNED LAND ON THE EAST SIDE OF BROWN CREEK ADJ. TO THE SWAMP. WHO KNOWS, I MAY HAVE BEEN BORN ON SOME OF THE ORIGINAL RUSHING LAND. MY YOUNGEST BROTHER LEON RUSHING WAS BORN THERE ALSO.

GROWING UP IN ANSON CO. IN THE 1950S, OUR FATHER WOULD DRIVE AROUND THE COUNTRY SIDE AND SHOW US DIFFERENT PLACES, ONE BEING THE OLD RUSHING HOME PLACE. THE OLD HOUSE WAS A TWO STORY WITH A FIRE PLACE AT EACH END. THE HOME PLACE WAS BURNED DOWN BY AN ARSONIST ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO, ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER OLD AND UNOCUPIED DWELLINGS, BEFORE HE WAS ARRESTED. IT IS SAID TO BE THE HOME PLACE OF WILLIAM RUSHING. AS IT IS DESIGNATED AS RUSHING ON AN 1878 ANSON CO. MAP, LOCATED JUST NORTH OF WHITE STORE. THE OTHER PLACE OUR FATHER POINTED OUT WAS THE OLD JOSEPH WHITE HOMEPLACE, JUST DOWN THE ROAD FROM WHERE WE LIVED IN 1952. HE MENTIONED THAT MINNIE BALLS FROM THE CIVIL WAR WERE EMBEDDED IN THE HOUSE. AFTER NEARLY 50 YEARS I CAN STILL REMEMBER THIS VERY WELL.

NONE OF THE RUSHINGS IN MY FAMILY KNEW WHO THE FATHER OF WESLEY WAS. MY FATHER IS ALBERT BAXTER RUSHING, SON OF WILLIAM ISHAM RUSHING, SON OF WESLEY MORRIS RUSHING. THE ONLY INFORMATION WE HAD ON THE RUSHINGS IS WHAT OUR FATHER TOLD ,THAT A WILLIAM RUSHING AND SIX SONS CAME TO THE ANSON CO. AREA CIRCA 1750. IN FEBRUARY OF 1997, I TOOK A TRIP TO THE N.C. STATE ARCHIVES TO SEE WHAT I COULD FIND ON THE RUSHINGS. I FOUND THE 1860 CENSUS OF ANSON CO. LOOKING FOR RUSHINGS THAT HAD A CHILD BY THE NAME OF WESLEY. I LOCATED A JESSE J. RUSHING, WHO WAS 57 YEARS OF AGE, AND AND HAD A MALE LISTED IN HIS HOUSEHOLD BY THE NAME OF WESLEY AND WAS LESS THAN ONE YEAR OLD. WE KNEW THAT WESLEY WAS BORN IN 1860.

JESSE J. RUSHING WAS BORN 1804 IN ANSON COUNTY. HE HAD BEEN MARIED TWICE; FIRST TO A MARY BARRETT, DAUGHTER OF DOMINICK AND MARY BARRETT. JESSE AND MARY HAD 10 CHILDREN BEFORE SHE PASSED AWAY CIRCA 1855.

JESSE MARRIED A MARY MORRIS IN 1857 FROM UNION COUNTY ,DAUGHTER OF JOHN AND PHERBY SMITH MORRIS AND HAD 4 CHILDREN FROM THIS MARRIAGE.. I AM DESCENDED FROM THIS MARRIAGE.. JESSE PASSED AWAY IN 1867.

TO THIS DATE I DO NOT KNOW THE NAMES OF HIS PARENTS, BROTHERS OR SISTERS, A COMPLETE MYSTERY. IN FEBRUARY 1999, MY BROTHER LEON AND I TOOK A TRIP BACK TO ANSON CO. DETERMINED TO FIND OUT WHERE JESSE LIVED AND WHERE HE WAS BURRIED.

WE KNEW THAT A PERSON BY THE NAME OF L [LOU] HUNTLEY OWNED THE OLD RUSHING HOMEPLACE IN 1932, AND HAS 2 DAUGHTER STILL LIVING IN THE AREA. WE TALKED TO MATTIE LOU HUNTLEY HORNE, AND ASKED HER IF SHE HAD EVER HEARD OF JESSE RUSHING, AND SHE REPIED THAT SHE HAD; AND SAID THAT JESSE OWNED THE OLD RUSHING HOMEPLACE AND THE LAND AROUND IT. ALSO SAID THAT HER FATHER SHOWED HER A SMALL GRAVEYARD, MARKED ONLY WITH ROCKS, CONTAINING APPROXIMATELY 5 GRAVES, LOCATED BESIDE OF THE ROAD, NEXT TO THE RUSHING HOMEPLACE , AND THAT JESSE WAS BURRIED THERE. THE GRAVEYARD WAS DESTROYED.

AS I HAVE STATED ABOVE, I DO NO KNOW THE PARENTS, BROTHERS OR SISTERS OF JESSE J. RUSHING. SOMEHOW OR ANOTHER HE IS CLOSELEY RELATED TO SOLOMON RUSHING, AS HE AND JESSE, TOGETHER PURCHASED 275 ACRES OF LAND ON THE EAST SIDE OF BROWN CREEK, FROM PAUL RUSHING, THE EXECUTOR OF SOLOMON RUSHING SENIOR. THIS LAND WAS SOLD TO RICHARD CROWDER IN 1834. AND SOLOMON MOVED TO ALABAMA, ALONG WITH PAUL AND STEPHEN RUSHING. PAUL AND STEPHEN WERE THE EXECUTORS OF THE WILL OF SOLOMON RUSHING SENIOR.

A SISTER OF JESSE COULD BE ELVY RUSHING; BORN 1802 IN ANSON CO. MARRIED A WILLIAM LEARD AND MOVED TO GEORGIA. TWO OF THEIR CHILDREN WERE NAMED JESSE J. LEARD AND DICKSON RUSHING LEARD.

THERE WAS A DICKSON RUSHING LIVING IN ANSON CO., NOW UNION COUNTY, BEING ABOUT THE SAME AGE AS JESSE. HE APPARENTLY LEFT THE STATE.

IN 1829 WILLIAM M. RUSHING AND DICKSON RUSHING WITNESED A CONVEYANCE. FRANCES RUSHING TO REBECKA RUSHING [A SISTER]. ALL HER PERSONAL PROPERTY, APPARENTLY FRANCES WAS MOVING AWAY.

THE OLDEST SON OF WILLIAM M. RUSHING, ANDREW JACKSON RUSHING NAMED 2 OF HIS SONS JESSE J. AND JOSEPH J. RUSHING. WILLIAM M. AND ANDREW J. RUSHING LIVED JUST INSIDE THE UNION COUNTY LINE. WILLIAM HAD LAND NEXT TO JESSE IN ANSON CO. JESSE RUSHINGS OLDEST SON IS JOSEPH JOEL RUSHING.

IN 1830 JESSE J. RUSHING WAS LIVING VERY NEAR A JOHN RUSHING, SOLOMON RUSHING, LEVI MEADOWS AND DAVID MEADOWS ON DEADFALL CREEK, JUST NORTH OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA BORDER.

IN 1840 JESSE RUSHING WAS LIVING IN UNION CO. VERY NEAR WILLIAM M. RUSHING.

IN 1850 JESSE RUSHING WAS LIVING BACK IN ANSON CO. APPARENTLY AT THE OLD RUSHING HOMEPLACE, AND LIVED THERE UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1867.

IN 1850 JESSE OWNED 15 SLAVES AND IN 1860 HE OWNED 20 SLAVES.

AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH, JESSE OWNED APROXIMATELY 1100 ACRES OF LAND IN ANSON AND UNION COUNTIES. THE RUSHINGS IN VIRGINIA AND NORTHEASTERN N.C.

THE EARLIEST RUSHING I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO LOCATE IN THE COLONIES SEEMS TO BE A MATHEW RUSHING, JAMES CITY COUNTY VIRGINIA. MATHEW PASSED AWAY IN 1678, LEAVING A WIFE [NAME UNKNOWN] AND TWO SONS BY THE NAME OF WILLIAM AND MATHEW. IT APPEARS THAT WILLIAM DIES BEFORE HE BECOMES OF AGE, LEAVING ONLY MATHEW TO CARRY ON THE RUSHING NAME. ACCORDING TO COURT RECORDS MATHEW BECOMES OF AGE AROUND 1690. MATHEWS NAME DOES NOT COME UP AGAIN UNTIL 1714 IN THE ISLE OF WIGHT CO., WHEN HE AND EDWARD GOODSON RECEIVE A LAND GRANT FOR 640 ACRES OF LAND FROM THE LT. GOVERNER OF VIRGINIA. FOR PROVIDING PASSAGE FOR 10 PERSONS. THE LAND WAS LOCATED ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE BLACKWATER SWAMP AND IS BOUNDED BY THE NOTTOWAY SWAMP.

ON 20 NOVEMBER 1716 MATHEW RUSHIN SOLD HIS SHARE TO EDWARD GOODSON EXECPT 100 ACRES, UPON WHICH GOODSON LIVES.

MATHEW RUSHIN LIVED IN THE ISLE OF WIGHT VIRGINIA WHEN HE APPLIED FOR THE GRANT, BUT MOVED TO ALBERMARLE CO. NORTH CAROLINA [CHOWAN PRECT.] IN 1714 OR BEFORE.

WILLIAM BROWN SOLD TO MATHEW RUSHIN 150 ACRES OF LAND ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE MEHERRIN RIVER IN 1714. THIS LAND WAS LATER SOLD TO WILLIAM BRIDGER IN 1718. ELIZABETH IS THE WIFE OF MATHEW RUSHIN, AS IT IS STATED IN LAND TRANSACTIONS. THIS LAND IS JUST SOUTH OF THE VIRGINIA BORDER.

IN 1718 THOMAS KIRBY SOLD TO MATHEW RUSHING 150 ACRES OF LAND ON THE ROANOKE RIVER IN NORTHAMPTON CO. THIS LAND IS SOUTHWEST OF THE PRESENT DAY TOWN OF JACKSON, IN WHAT IS CALLED KINCHENS NECK.

IN 1731 BARNABE MCKINNIE SOLD TO WILLIAM RUSHING 150 ACRES OF LAND THAT HIS FATHER MATHEW RUSHING HAD LIVED ON. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT MATHEW IS NO LONGER LIVING.

DEC. 7 1739 WILLIAM RUSHING JR. WITTNESED A DEED BETWEEN JOHN WHEELER AND ROLAND WILLIAMS.

NOW WE CAN SAY FOR SURE THAT MATHEW HAD A SON BY THE NAME OF WILLIAM AND WILLIAM HAD A SON BY THE NAME OF WILLIAM.

IN 1740 A MATHEW RUSHING SHOWS UP IN EDGECOMBE CO. HE HAS A WIFE BY THE NAME OF ELIZABETH. THEY CONTINUE TO LIVE IN EDGECOMBE CO. UNTIL 1767.

JOHN RUSHING WITNESSES A LAND TRANSACTION FOR MATHEW RUSHING IN THE EARLY 1740S.

WILLIAM RUSHING IS MENTIONED AT LEAST TWICE AS A WIT. IN LAND TRANSACTIONS IN THE LATE 1740S. IN NORTHAMPTON CO. 1749 WOULD BE THE LAST.

IN 1755 JOHN WILLIAMS OF NORTHAMPTON CO. SELLS TO WILLIAM ARMISTEAD OF NORTHAMPTON CO. 150 ACRES OF LAND THAT WILLIAM RUSHING PURCHASED OF BARNABE MCKINNIE IN 1731. IT WOULD APPEAR TO ME THAT WILLIAM RUSHING SON OF MATHEW IS DECEASED. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF WILLIAM RUSHIING SELLING THIS LAND AND NO EVIDENCE OF HOW JOHN WILLIAMS BECAME THE OWNER.

IT IS SAID THE WILLIAM RUSHING THAT SETTLED IN ANSON CO. AROUND 1750 IS THE SON OF MATHEW AND ELIZABETH RUSHING. I DO NOT FIND THIS TO BE TRUE. IT HAS TO BE WILLIAM RUSHING JR. WHEN HE ARRIVES IN ANSON CO. HE WOULD THEN BE CONSIDERED WILLIAM RUSHING SENIOR.

IN MY OPINNION MATHEW RUSHING AND WIFE ELIZABETH HAD AT LEAST ONE SON BY THE NAME OF WILLIAM, AND WILLIAM HAD A SON BY THE NAME OF WILLIAM AND MATHEW AND JOHN ARE SONS ALSO.

THE EARLIEST RUSHINGS IN ANSON CO.

1- WILLIAM RUSHING SENIOR. LIVED ON THOMPSONS CREEK. 2- WILLIAM RUSHING JR. LIVED ON THE NORTH FORK OF THOMPSONS CREEK IN 1787. 3- ROWLAND RUSHING LIVED ON CEDAR CREEK. 4- RICHARD RUSHING LIVED ON THE EAST SIDE OF BROWN CREEK, NEAR A SWAMP IN 1771. 5- ABRAHAM RUSHING LIVED IN THE THOMPSONS CREEK AREA. 6- JOHNSON RUSHING 7- MARK RUSHING 8- ROBERT RUSHING LIVED ON LITTLE BROWN CREEK. 9- SOLOMON RUSHING LIVED IN THE THOMPSONS CREEK AREA. 10- NOAH RUSHING LIVED ON THE NORTH FORK OF THOMPSONS CREEK IN 1787. 11- DAVID RUSHING 12- PHILLIP RUSHING LIVED ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF BROWN CREEK, NEAR THE MUDDY SPRINGS. 13- JACOB RUSHING 14- MATHEW RUSHING JR. LIVED AND DIED ON THE NORTH SIDE OF BROWN CREEK. 15- JOHN RUSHING LIVED ON LITTLE BROWN CREEK.

THE ABOVE DAVID RUSHING IS MENTIONED ONLY ONCE IN 1776 AS OWING MONEY TO JOHN COTTON A FORMER JUSTICE OF ANSON; ALONG WITH WILLIAM RUSHING SENIOR WILLIAM RUSHING, JOHN RUSHING AND DAVID RUSHING.

THE ABOVE JOHNSON RUSHING IS MENTIONED IN 1768 WITH JOHN RUSHING AND JACOB RUSHING, UNRECORDED PLAT FOR LAND NOT GRANTED , 200 ACRES OF LAND ON THOMPSONS CREEK, ST DAVIDS PARRISH, SURVEYED BY JOHN WADE. THIS WAS IN SOUTH CAROLINA. JOHN, JACOB AND JOHNSON APPEAR TO BE CLOSELY ASSOCIATED.

AS TO THE MATHEW RUSHING IN ANSON CO. HE DOES NOT SHOW UP IN LAND GRANTS UNTIL THE EARLY 1770S. BUT THERE WAS A MATT RUSHING IN ANSON CO. AS EARLY AS 1755; AS WILLIAM RUSHING WAS ISSUED 150 ACRES OF LAND ON BOTH SIDES OF DEEP CREEK IN 1763, BUT THE GRANT WAS ENTERED IN 1755. CHAIN BEARERS WERE WILLIAM RUSHING AND MATT RUSHING. [THE CHAIN CARRIERS ARE THE PERSONS WHO CARRY THE CHAINS FOR THE SURVEYOR.] IS THIS WILLIAM AND HIS SON MATHEW, OR WILLIAM AND A BROTHER.

IN 1768 WILLIAM JOHNSTON RECEIVED A LAND GRANT ON BROWN CREEK, INCLUDING THE PLACE WHERE MATHEW RUSHING LIVED.

IN 1768 JOHN WADE SOLD TO WILLIAM JOHNSON SOME PROPERTY ON BLACKJACK CREEK. IN THE PRESENCE OF WILLIAM RUSHING AND MATHEW RUSHING SENIOR. SO THIS MATHEW WOULD HAVE TO BEEN BORN 1730 OR BEFORE.

IT HAS BEEN STATED THERE WERE 2 DIFFERENT RUSHING FAMILIES LIVING IN ANSON CO. AT THE SAME TIME ; EACH HEADED BY A WILLIAM RUSHING. ONE BEING ON THOMPSONS CREEK AND THE OTHER ON BROWN CREEK, AND THEY WERE PROBABLY COUSINS. THIS WOULD BE IN THE 1750-1780 PERIOD. I CAN NOT FIND ANY EVIDENCE OF THIS.

I HAVE IN MY POSSESSION, COPIES OF THE DEEDS AND LAND GRANTS FROM THE EARLY 1700S TO ABOUT 1870. IT APPEARS TO ME THERE WERE 3 RUSHING FAMILYS IN ANSON CO. AND CRAVEN CO. S.C. [THOMPSON CREEK AREA]. WILLIAM, JOHN AND MATHEW RUSHING.

ACCORDING TO LAND TRANSACTIONS MATHEW RUSHING SENIOR CAME TO THE CRAVEN CO. AND ANSON CO. AREA AROUND 1768.

WILLIAM RUSHING SENIOR RECEIVED SEVERAL LAND GRANTS ON THOMPSONS CREEK AND THE BROWN CREEK AND LITTLE BROWN AREA; TOTALING SEVERAL HUNDRED ACRES. LITTLE BROWN CREEK THAT IS SHOWN ON THE ANSON CO. MAP TODAY IS NOT THE ORIGINIAL LITTLE BROWN CREEK. THE ORIGINIAL LITTLE BROWN CREEK IS JUST WEST OF THE PRESENT DAY WHITE STORE AND RUNS SOUTH FOR SEVERAL MILES.

WILLIAM RUSHING JR. RECEIVED SEVERAL LAND GRANTS ON THOMPSONS CREEK AND LITTLE BROWN CREEK.

IN 1782 ROBERT RUSHING RECEIVED A LAND GRANT ON LITTLE BROWN CREEK NEXT TO WILLIAM JOHNSTON AND WILLIAM RUSHING THE THIRDS HOME LINE.

NOW WE KNOW THAT WILLIAM RUSHING SENIOR HAD A GRANDSON IN ANSON CO. AS HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD IN 1782, LIVING IN THE WHITE STORE AREA.

.

THE CHILDREN OF WILLIAM RUSHING ON THOMPSONS CREEK SEEM TO BE. 1-WILLIAM JR. 2- JOHN 3- ABRAHAM 4- ROLAND 5- SOLOMON 6- MARK 7-noah

THE RUSHINGS THAT LIVED ON BROWN CREEK AND LITTLE BROWN CREEK, THAT APPEAR TO BE BROTHERS ARE; 1-RICHARD 2-ROBERT 3-JOHN 4-PHILLIP 5-WILLIAM KILLED AT DROWNING CREEK

THERE IS A STRONG POSABILTY THAT DAVID RUSHING IS A BROTHER TO THE RUSHINGS ON BROWN CREEK, DUE TO THE FACT THAT RICHARD AND ROBERT EACH NAMED A SON OF THEIRS DAVID. DAVID RUSHINGS NAME IS MENTIONED ONCE IN 1776, AS OWING MONEY TO JAMES COTTON , A FORMER CHIEF JUSTICE OF ANSON CO.

IN 1767 WILLIAM RUSHING GAVE TO WILLIAM JOHNSON 150 ACRES OF LAND ON LITTLE BROWN CREEK AND BROWN CREEK. THE LAND WOULD BE ON BOTH SIDES OF LITTLE BROWN CREEK AND CROSSING TO THE NORTH SIDE OF BROWN CREEK, LOCATED AT WHITE STORE. IT IS STATED THAT WILLIAM JOHNSON MARRIED A DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM RUISHING SENIOR OF THOMPSONS CREEK. THE WILL OF WILLIAM JOHSON STATES THAT HIS WIFE IS NAMED SARAH AND THE EXECUTORS ARE RICHARD RUSHING AND PAUL RUSHING.

IN 1778 WILLIAM RUSHING SENIOR OF THOMPSONS CREEK GIVES TO RICHARD AND ROBERT RUSHING 200 ACES EACH LAND ON ROBERT RUSHING BRANCH A BRANCH OF BROWN CREEK. IT IS STATED THAT RICHARD RUSHING MARRIED A DAUGHTER OF WILLIAM RUSHING SENIOR OF THOMPSONS CREEK. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT ROBERT RUSHING ALSO MARRIED A DAUGHTER ALSO.

A DEED IN 1783 STATES THAT WILLIAM RUSHING SENIOR GIVES TO HIS SON WILLIAM 50 ACRES OF LAND ON THOMPSONS CREEK. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME WILLIAM RUSHING GIVES ANY OF HIS SONS ANY LAND THAT IS RECORDED.

BELOW ARE EXCERPTS OF THE LAND GRANTS AND DEEDS BEGINNING IN THE EARLY 1700S TO AROUND 1870. I HAVE IN MY POSSESSION COPIES OF NEARLY ALL THE LAND GRANTS AND DEEDS. A FEW ARE IN SUCH BAD SHAPE THEY CAN NOT BE READ.

THE ORIGINIAL GRANTS AND LAND DEEDS ARE LOCATED IN THE BASEMENT OF STATE ARCHIVES IN RALEIGH, N.C. MATHEW RUSHING

THERE WAS A MATHEW RUSHIN LIVING IN CHARLES CITY COUNTY VIRGINIA. MATHEW PASSED AWAY IN 1678, LEAVING A WIFE AND TWO SONS, WILLIAM AND MATHEW. THE NAME OF MATHEWS WIFE IS NOT KNOWN.
