Obituary

Roy Willard Pettigrew, was born January 19, 1933, in Perryville, Tennessee. He was one of seven sons and two daughters born to Herman and Ceillie Pettigrew. On Sunday, February 5, 1995, at 7:15 A.M., he was called home.

Roy finished his grammar school education in seven years before going on to high school, where he graduated first in his class. At the age of seventeen, he joined the army. He completed his service in Korea, where he was stricken with spinal meningitis. The illness left him temporarily paralyzed with amnesia and without the ability to read.

After a four month hospital stay, he was released and honorably discharged from the service. He returned home to Perryville, where he resided until he enrolled at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. While at Lane College, he majored in mathematics and chemistry. He was a member of the Young Scientist Club and pledged the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

After graduation, he relocated to Chicago, Illinois where he became active in numerous youth groups. He went on to do some graduate work at the University of Illinois at Carbondale. He left there to accept a teaching position in Chicago, Illinois.

At the time of his death, he was teaching in the Chicago City Wide College System.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Lorraine M. Pettigrew; his devoted children; his brothers: Joe, George and Henry; his sisters: Faye and Neva; a host of friends and family.
