Decatur County High School - 1928

Decaturville Academy was the first school in Decaturville and dates from the forming of the county in 1846. Lot 99 was set aside in the original Decaturville plat for this purpose.  Around 1909, the first wooden structure was erected on the Perryville - Decaturville Road in the location that was to become Decatur County High School. The first brick structure was built around 1911 and expanded in 1928.  The 1922 class is the first graduating class of record but there were no doubt earlier graduates.

The gymnasium was added around 1941 using WPA labor.  The first football team was organized in 1927 with C. A. Palmer serving as coach.  Players were: Dee Johnson, Hubert Maners, Fred Dixon, Grady Averett, Frank Adair, Hobart Johnson, J.R. (Kinky) Laster, Alvin Myracle, William C. Stout, Luther Jones and Joe Quinn.

Decatur County High School operated until it became Decaturville High School with the 1957 - 1958 school year. The renaming was coincident with the move to a new building to replace the original building that burned in December of 1956.  Classes were held to complete the 1956-1957 at various locations around Decaturville including store fronts and churches until the new building was completed.

Prior to 1957, the school was called Decatur County High School as well as Decaturville High School.  The names seemed to have been interchangeable for many years.  The origins of the Decatur County High School name is not known since it seems to have opened about the same time as Parsons High School.

Decaturville High School was consolidated into Riverside High School with the 1965 - 1966 school year.  The school building is now utilized for Decaturville Elementary School.

Decatur County High School Graduation Pictures Needed!

Graduating class pictures are needed for the local history web site, www.tnyesterday.com for the purpose of preserving these images for future generations. Class pictures are needed for all years of all Decatur County High Schools including Decatur County High School, Parsons High School, Decaturville High School, Riverside High School, Scotts Hill High School, Crowder High School, Decatur County Training School and Scotts Hill College. We are most interested in the composite pictures of individual graduates but will accept all group pictures.  We are not scanning pictures of individual graduates at this time. Pictures will be scanned and returned immediately so there is no danger of loss or damage to your photographs. If you are interested in supporting this effort, please contact Dian Brasher who is coordinating this effort to arrange for an appointment to have your class photographs scanned. Please support this important project to preserve images of these class photographs.

Please contact me if we have omitted any former Decatur County High Schools.
